06 Oct 2024 - The McLaren W1 is the revolutionary successor to the iconic McLaren F1 and P1, elevating performance to new heights. It embodies McLaren's core principles: exceptional power, advanced aerodynamics, lightweight design, and pure driver connection.
Designed by a team with experience in 16 Formula 1 World Championships, the W1 features the new MHP-8 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine and an E-module for a combined output of 1275PS. It is the fastest-lapping and fastest-accelerating road-legal McLaren to date, with innovative aerodynamics that adapt between road and race modes.
The W1 offers a thrilling driving experience on both road and track, showcasing McLaren's commitment to performance and innovation. Its reveal date, October 6, 2024, marks the 50th anniversary of McLaren's first F1 championships.
EPIC PERFORMANCE FROM V8 HIGH-PERFORMANCE HYBRID POWERTRAIN WITH PURE RWD
The McLaren W1 features a new High-Performance Hybrid powertrain with an MHP-8 V8 engine, an E-module (electric motor), and an 8-speed transmission. It produces a total of 1275PS, making it the most powerful McLaren ever, with a power-to-weight ratio of 911PS/tonne.
This hybrid system offers impressive acceleration: 0-100km/h in 2.7 seconds, 0-200km/h in 5.8 seconds, and 0-300km/h in under 12.7 seconds. The rear-wheel-drive setup enhances performance and steering precision.
The V8 engine is lightweight and high-revving, featuring advanced technologies for efficiency and power. The E-module adds 347PS and is efficient, weighing only 20kg. It includes a 1.384kWh battery, allowing for short electric-only driving.
Overall, the W1 combines cutting-edge hybrid technology with McLaren's commitment to lightweight engineering, resulting in a supercar that excels in performance while minimizing weight.
BORN FROM FORMULA 1-INSPIRED GROUND AERODYNAMICS
McLaren has a long history of using aerodynamics to enhance performance, starting with the 1967 M6A Can-Am racecar. The new McLaren W1 continues this tradition, featuring advanced ground effect aerodynamics for high downforce and low drag.
The W1's design is the most aerodynamic yet, created after 350 hours in the wind tunnel. Its unique Aerocell monocoque optimizes airflow and incorporates McLaren’s first Anhedral doors, which enhance cooling while saving weight.
The W1 features active aerodynamic elements that adjust for different driving modes, generating up to 1000kg of downforce at high speeds. Its Active Long Tail rear wing and front wing work together to manage airflow, ensuring exceptional performance on both road and track.
DYNAMIC GENIUS WITHOUT COMPROMISE, DRIVEN BY MCLAREN DNA
McLaren’s W1 features a lightweight design, weighing just 1,399 kg, essential for high performance on both road and track.
It has a new Race Active Chassis Control III suspension with three settings: Comfort for smooth rides, Sport for agility, and Race for track-focused stability and downforce.
The suspension, combined with active aerodynamics, allows for effective torque management, eliminating the need for all-wheel drive while enhancing steering feedback.
W1's advanced braking system includes 6-piston front and 4-piston rear calipers with unique carbon ceramic discs, delivering exceptional stopping power—stopping from 100 km/h in 29 meters and 200 km/h in 100 meters. Formula 1-inspired cooling ducts also enhance brake efficiency and downforce.
THE FASTEST LAPPING AND FASTEST ACCELERATION ROAD-LEGAL MCLAREN EVER
The McLaren W1 outperforms the lightweight McLaren Senna by an impressive 3 seconds per lap at the Nardo circuit, making it the fastest accelerating road-legal McLaren ever. This is achieved through a combination of high downforce and low drag.
The Race mode offers two suspension settings: Race and Race+ for varying track conditions. Drivers can choose ‘GP’ for consistent performance over longer sessions or ‘Sprint’ for maximum power on a single lap.
Two buttons on the steering wheel allow for quick access to ‘Boost’ for extra E-module power and an Aero button for Drag Reduction System (DRS) activation via the rear wing.
W1 uses Pirelli’s specially designed P ZEROTM Trofeo RS tyres, which provide optimal grip and performance on the track. Additional tyre options include the P ZEROTM R for road use and P ZEROTM Winter 2 for cold weather performance.
THE PERFECT SUPERCAR DRIVING ENVIRONMENT
Driving the McLaren W1 begins with its striking Anhedral Doors, which open upwards to reveal a spacious and innovative cabin. These doors feature a sculpted design to enhance interior space.
The W1 prioritizes ergonomics and visibility, offering ample room for both driver and passenger. Large glazed sections provide an airy feel, and the narrow A-pillars enhance forward visibility. Even the sun visors are lightweight, made from just 3mm thick carbon fiber.
The seats are integrated into the carbon fiber monocoque, offering exceptional support and a more reclined driving position. The cockpit features adjustable floor-mounted aluminum pedals and a unique smaller, flatter steering wheel with optional shift lights for optimal driving performance.
The steering wheel has just two buttons for Boost and Aero Deployment, designed for easy thumb access, while chassis and powertrain modes are adjusted via rocker controls on the instrument panel, which moves with the steering column.
The high-resolution 8” touch screen McLaren Infotainment System (MIS II) includes Apple CarPlay and USB connectivity. There are also practical storage solutions, including a sliding cupholder, small item storage behind the armrest, and a luggage shelf behind the seats, accommodating up to 117 liters for weekend bags or helmets.
VISUALLY ARRESTING ENGINEERING
McLaren's W1 embodies its Performance by Design philosophy, focusing on five core principles: Epic, Athletic, Functional, Focused, and Intelligent. Its sleek carbon fiber body features a smooth upper surface and a highly engineered ground effect underbody.
The front showcases impressive aerodynamics, with layered bodywork directing airflow and unique intakes, including a central nostril for enhanced cooling.
Inspired by Formula 1, the side design includes cut-out doors for airflow, large intakes for radiators, and mirrors positioned to minimize aerodynamic disruption.
The rear features a detailed engine cover and an Active Long Tail wing, ensuring clean airflow to the twin exhausts and a prominent rear diffuser.
Overall, the W1 presents a clean design with a hammerhead-shaped nose and teardrop cabin, optimized for aerodynamic performance.
EXCEPTIONALLY INDIVIDUAL AND UNIQUELY DESIREBLE
McLaren Special Operations offers virtually limitless personalization for W1 owners, allowing them to design a unique supercar. They can choose from luxury materials, including the innovative McLaren InnoKnit, a lightweight and flexible material that integrates seamlessly into the interior without wasteful cutting or sewing.
InnoKnit can be customized in various colors and textures, and even used in audio and visual elements to enhance cabin lighting and speaker grilles in the premium Bowers & Wilkins audio system.
Exterior details, inspired by aerodynamic styling and Formula 1 design, provide additional customization options. Owners can use virtual and augmented reality tools to visualize and create their personalized W1.
ULTIMATE WARRANTY PROVISION WITH SERVICING AND MAINTENANCE TO MATCH
Every W1 comes as standard with a comprehensive warranty [4-year/unlimited mileage vehicle; 6-year/75,000km HV battery] and a 4-year inclusive service plan that complements a unique ownership experience.
The new hybrid powertrain has been developed to a maintenance cycle similar to the V6 hybrid powertrain and the service schedule for W1 will follow a 12-month cycle. This is in line with McLaren series production supercars rather than schedules of many track-focused cars which have reduced service intervals based on the number of hours of running.
With the 399 examples of W1 that will be built all allocated. Further information about the W1 can be found at: https://cars.mclaren.com/en/W1
