PLANO, Texas (Sep. 26, 2024) – The Toyota RAV4 Prime, introduced in 2019, offers the flexibility of a plug-in hybrid with 42 miles of all-electric range and an estimated 38 MPG in hybrid mode. For 2025, it rebrands as the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV), simplifying the model's name to highlight its powertrain options. The new name also comes with a logo update, removing the blue “halo.”
The 2025 RAV4 PHEV comes in SE and XSE trims, featuring 33.5 cubic feet of cargo space, seating for five, and 8-inch ground clearance. Standard features include heated front seats, Blind Spot Monitor, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. Available upgrades include ventilated front seats, a moonroof, and heated rear seats.
With 302 horsepower and a 0-60 mph time of 5.5 seconds, it offers strong performance, enhanced by 19-inch wheels on the XSE and 18-inch wheels on the SE. The exterior includes LED Daytime Running Lights, a black diamond-patterned grille, and stylish accents. The RAV4 PHEV comes in six colors for the SE and five two-tone options for the XSE.
The 2025 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid starts at $43,865 and is expected in dealerships by late 2024.
EFFICIENT AND POWERFUL BY ANY NAME
The RAV4 first introduced the Plug-in Hybrid powertrain with the "Prime" name in 2019, signifying top-tier performance and efficiency, a concept originally introduced with the 2016 Prius Plug-in Hybrid. The 2025 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid continues this legacy, offering 302 horsepower and a 0-60 time of 5.5 seconds. It can operate as a hybrid for long drives or in EV-only mode for an estimated 42 miles of electric range.
Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive powers both the RAV4 Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid, but the PHEV offers enhanced EV-only capability using a 2.5-liter engine paired with two electric motors. When the 18.5kWh battery runs low, it recharges through regenerative braking, the engine, or by plugging into a standard household outlet. Charging takes about 12 hours on a 120V outlet or 2.5 hours with a Level II charger.
The RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid maintains Toyota's reputation for high performance and fuel efficiency, combining power and smooth driving in one package.
DRIVE MODE DELIGHT
The RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid offers four driving modes: EV, HV/EV Auto, Hybrid, and Charge. In EV Mode, the vehicle operates like a fully electric car, using only its battery. HV/EV Auto optimizes the use of both powertrains, favoring electric power for city driving and engaging the gasoline engine for more demanding situations like hills or high speeds. In Hybrid Mode, the system efficiently switches between the engine and electric motor. Charge Mode uses the gasoline engine to charge the battery while driving.
It also has three drive modes: Eco, Sport, and Trail. Eco mode enhances fuel efficiency by smoothing acceleration and adjusting climate controls. Sport mode sharpens steering and boosts acceleration for sporty driving. Trail mode improves traction on rough roads by distributing power to specific wheels when extra grip is needed.
VERSATILE & STREET-SMART
The RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid shares the Electronic On-Demand AWD system with the RAV4 Hybrid, using a rear-mounted electric motor to power the rear wheels when needed, such as during acceleration or in low-traction conditions. This system also improves steering stability by reducing understeer and enhances hill-climbing off-road. Trail mode helps free stuck wheels by redirecting torque to grounded wheels, and paddle shifters increase regenerative braking for better control on hills.
The Predictive Efficient Drive feature uses navigation data to optimize battery use by learning road features like hills and stoplights to boost efficiency. Despite the Lithium-Ion battery, the RAV4 PHEV maintains spacious passenger room by mounting the battery under the floor, contributing to a low center of gravity for stable handling. Its heat pump HVAC system, adapted from the Prius, maximizes EV range by reducing energy use for cabin climate control.
