REMARKS:

The 280SLs were built from 1967 to 1971. Passionately referred to as the Pagoda SL, it earned its fame name from its patented concaved hardtop designed by Paul Bracq and Bela Barenyi. Paying homage to the legendary 300SL, it carried the enlarged three pointed star embedded on the front intake section, whilst featuring its own trademark Bosch fish bowl headlights.

It was the first generation bestowed with a safety body, with predesigned crumple zones and a hardened passenger cell. With a short wheel base, wide track and lightweight aluminum panels (bonnet, boot lid, doors & tonneau cover), the ingredients for a Sport Leich vehicle was in the making. There was also a proper shove, featuring an Inline-6 and fuel by a new injection system.

But as Mercedes’s sports car philosophy goes, it was not only designed just to be fast and sporty but also a very capable Grand Tourer. And with these elements, the total sales of the W113 doubled over the 190SL.

Imported and delivered brand new in Malaysia, this particular specimen is a very good example of a well maintained, loved and garaged vehicle. Its previous owner has owned the car for over 3 decades is also hands on in maintaining and running the vehicle. As a collector himself, the car is more of a statement than for use therefore the mileage has only reached 53k miles.

First look at the body and you will appreciate the pristine factory metal works. Although not in the freshest paint, the bodywork still shines and the lines correspond very nicely and there are no rust fields on, in and under the car. The spot welds on the car are clear and intact, the wheel arches carry the correct fasteners and the rear boot the panels are clean on the underside.

The interior has been refreshed some time ago and is still looking fresh. The rare third seat option is also available on this car, together with the hard and soft top.

The SL series are fast catching on in the classic collector’s world and prices have been steadily increasing. With some elbow grease, this specimen can easily revert to its concourse state, thanks to an already strong base and good running order. After decades of care and storage, this 280SL Pagoda is still going strong. Don’t miss out on this well behaved, factory-smelling, stout looking specimen. Contact us for more Q&A.
